Acne is a tricky skin condition that there are not many answers for. There's many causes and types of acne, that it is almost impossible to be sure where it's coming from. It can also be a frustrating and stressful thing to go through. This is why I have selected six skin care products to help you out as best as I can.
I dealt with acne for six years, and I spent thousands of dollars on dermatologists, aestheticians, and most of all, skin care products. Not only did I have Acne Vulgaris, or acne, but I also had fungal acne, which we talk about a little later.
I finally started doing in-depth research about acne, which helped me understand what was and wasn't beneficial for my skin. Thus, along my acne journey, I discovered the best skin care products for acne that are mentioned below, and my skin finally started to heal and clear up!
Hopefully this list of products will actually help you see a change and improvement in your skin, like it did for me and many other people. Most of all, I know dealing with acne can take a toll on your mental health, but I promise you are still beautiful and you will get through it!
1. Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40
If you're not a sunscreen user, you might be confused as to how this product relates to acne. However, sunscreen is an essential part of any skin care routine, ESPECIALLY if you have acne.
Sunscreen protects your skin from the sunlight's UV rays, and is insanely important for preventing acne, dark spots, and other bigger skin issued.
Although it won't make your acne disappear, sunscreen does prevent your acne scars from getting darker and larger. Personally, I have found that regular use of sunscreen has helped my acne scars heal a lot faster.
Another reason why sunscreen is so important is that many of acne treatment products cause your skin to be more sensitive, especially to the sun. Thus, your skin will be more prone to sun-burn, rashes, and irritation.
The Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen is the top sunscreen I recommend for any skin type. It is SPF 40, cruelty-free, and coral reef-safe! This sunscreen is very lightweight and does not leave a whitecast or oily residue on the skin.
2. CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser
Having a reliable facial cleanser is very important to your skin care routine, especially if you have acne. It's most likely not going to get rid of your acne, but your cleanser will set the tone for the rest of your skin care routine.
The main purpose of a cleanser is to remove the dirt and grime on your skin, without stripping your skin.
When looking for the best cleanser, you want to use one that is fragrance-free and gentle. You also want to avoid cleansers with parabens and essential oils to prevent irritation.
If you are struggling with acne, I highly recommend trying out skin care products from CeraVe. The CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser is a classic, go-to cleanser that is amazing for people with skin issues or sensitive skin.
This cleanser has Niacinamide and Hyaluronic Acid, which are two ingredients that highly benefit the skin. We will be discussing more about Niacinamide later on in this post.
Hyaluronic acid is a humectant that helps moisturize, and retain the moisture in the skin.
3. Differin Gel Adapalene Gel 0.1%
Let's briefly talk about Adapalene, which is a well known retinoid used for treating acne. Adapalene is a type of a Vitamin A derivative that has collagen promoting, healing, and anti-aging benefits.
You have to be very careful in picking a retinoid product because they are strong ingredients that can make your skin more sensitive.
Many retinoids are offered only through prescription because of its strength and concentration. In fact, you can't use retinoids while pregnant or breastfeeding because it is that powerful of an ingredient. You also shouldn't use a retinoid in the day time, as it makes your skin sensitive to the sun.
When you are first starting to use a retinoid, you want to slowly integrate the product into your skin care routine. I suggest you to start with mixing it in with your moisturizer for a week. Once you feel it is safe to use for your skin, then use it separately.
Differin Gel is a retinoid product with 0.1% Adapalene, and it is now available to purchase without a prescription! Differin is a common acne treatment product that helps to promote skin turnover, reduce redness/inflammation, and heal your skin. If you have been struggling with acne for sometime, I especially recommend you to try Differin Gel.
If you don't see any results with Differin Gel after six months to a year, I highly suggest you to see a dermatologist for clinical advice to possibly get prescribed stronger retinoids, such as Tretinoin.
4. Paula's Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant
BHA, or beta hydroxy acid, is commonly referred to as Salicylic acid, which I'm sure most of you have heard of. BHA is an active acid that goes beyond the skin's surface and chemically exfoliates your skin.
It helps to unclog your pores, making them look smaller, and preventing dirt and bacteria from being trapped in your skin. As mentioned before, BHAs gently exfoliate the skin to get rid of dead skin cells and promote your skin to resurface.
BHA's are also great because it has inflammatory properties. After using a product with BHA consistently, you will notice a huge difference in the overall look of your skin.
There are many cleansers, topical treatments, and other products with BHA in them. However, I find that these products often don't have a strong concentration of BHA to make a huge difference. Instead, I love to use a BHA exfoliants because they actually work!
Paula's Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant is the ULTIMATE BHA product to try for anyone struggling with acne. It's a fantastic product that helps clean the on and below the surface of your skin. This chemical exfoliant is not harsh on the skin, so it won't sting or irritate your face at all. I truly credit this for preventing more acne and calming down the redness on my skin. You can use this daily after cleansing your skin!
5. Naturium Niacinamide Serum 12% + Zinc 2%
Niacinamide is a HUGE favorite in the skin care world right now, and definitely for the right reasons. Niacinamide is an active ingredient that has a long list of beneficial effects. Some benefits are: reducing inflammation, unclogging pores, strengthening the skin, and LOTS more!
Zinc is also a big ingredient that is used to treat acne, as research shows many people with severe acne tend to have a body deficiency of Zinc. It helps to heal the skin, alleviate redness, and treat hyperpigmentation.
These two ingredients are good for all skin types, so any person struggling with acne can get benefits from Niacinamide and Zinc.
Although you won't see results right away, as you continue to incorporate these ingredients to your daily skin care routine, your skin will drastically improve.
I love this product so much that I use it both morning and night, and it has never been an issue for my sensitive, acne prone skin. It soaks into the skin amazingly, so you don't have to worry about it feeling sticky or grimy afterwards!
6. Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo
Fungal acne, is not necessarily acne, but it is a skin problem that many people experience. Malessezia Folliculitis, also known as Fungal acne, occurs when your skin has an overproduces of your skin's natural yeast.
Many people with fungal acne, also commonly have dandruff or bumps on their chest and back. Typically though, on the skin, fungal acne on the face looks like small bumps (skin colored or red), that are typically itchy. These bumps are also very hard to pop, and almost feel like they are deeper in the skin compared to regular pimples.
Fungal acne is usually not treatable with acne-treatment products, which makes this issue more difficult to get rid of.
You can use this as a second cleanser, if you're more sensitive, or as a 1-5 minute face mask. After washing off the Nizoral, make sure to use a good moisturizer, as this product tends make your skin more dry.
This post went over the TOP 6 skin care products that will actually help your acne!
I hope this gave you some insight on how to treat and prevent acne!
